As stated by Griffiths (2012 p.369), the sales of Fairtrade international certified products totaled to approximately 98 billion United states dollars which represent 22 percent increment compared to the previous year. However, Fairtrade does not give a breakdown of how much of these sales reach the producers in developing countries. Moreover Fairtrade does not reveal how much of these figures are from the extra prices charged for Fairtrade goods. Inefficient marketing system is one of the major factors that have resulted into lack of benefits to farers and producers. Fairtrade emphasizes on selling through monopolist cooperatives which are most of the times corrupt and inefficient (Griffiths, 2012 p. 370). It is also important to note that some private traders are more efficient than the cooperatives. In this regard it is also very difficult for the members of a cooperative to switch even if the cooperative is being mismanaged or when a cooperative is being bankrupt especially when they want to attain fair trade status. In past western society ancient Greece, homosexual teachings were performed by the Greek society, and were thought of as a societal norm Younger males were normally seen in a homosexual relationship with an older male, these types of relations were common in ancient Greece. The way Greek perceived life back in ancient times it is starting to ease up in our modern time, and homosexuality is beginning to be viewed as if we were in ancient times especially among western countries. In modern time homosexuals are learning to cope with their homosexuality, as it is beginning to be seen as something normal that has been here since ancient times for thousands of years. Homosexuality in the ancient Greek society shows that even back then people were aware of the different sexual behaviors and feelings certain people might have, and even back then they accepted peopleââ¬â¢s individual sexual choices. In modern day when a homosexual is first coming out and announcing his way of life he/she should be proud of what they are doing because it is something that has been going on for thousands of years, and is not something to be ashamed and secretive about. Homosexuals should not let judgmental people get to them by saying you were born that way or the environment influenced you to behave like that. The truth is the truth and you are who you are nothing can or will change that is if we stay true to our self. This means as long as we know where we came from and who we ar e why should we let peoples words bother us because we know the truth about our self. As we move along, back to ancient Greece and now also including the people of ancient Romeââ¬â¢s homosexuality. In both of the cities ancient Greece/Rome men would travel the streets of the city looking for someone to rock their world. On top of roaming the streets for some good quality male bonding they would dress and act as if they were not men, but female. This was look at in disapproval and unacceptable that is why when the religion of Christianity increased and started to grow the downfall of ancient Rome followed, and homosexual relations were banned. The new found law prohibited sexual behavior that was not found normal. Normal sexual behavior being male-femaleà and marriage any other acts of sex, and the people would be punished for their actions. This law continued for many years to follow, and people were committed and punished if they broke the law. Unfortunately this did not stop homosexuals from expressing their homosexuality they just became more discrete about it, so they would not see punishment from their actions. Today, most modern religions still do not approve of homosexuality seeing it as a sin. Some countries are very religious, and prohibit homosexual activity; those that are found guilty will be severely punished. The view that is seen on homosexuality in the modern day has been seen for thousands of years. That is why some homosexuals are afraid to accept their sexuality because of religious reasons (punishment from god) and society (disapproval). The hatred that is forced upon gay individuals has made it very difficult for them to be accepted among society. In our society it is normal when found to be gay to be criticized for it, and deal with harsh treatment that a straight person accepted in society would not have to deal with. When found to be a gay individual they even may have to change their church to one that accepts the view of a homosexuality. When growing up we learn that homosexuality is unnatural and not the right way of life that is not the case it is completely natural. Unfortunately many times in the beginning a homosexual might not know what they are experiencing wondering why they are different, and if it is alright they could grow to hate them self for it thinking that they are not normal. In modern time many countries still punish homosexuals, while others are more accepting they just deny homosexuals the right to marry due to religious reasons. That is all slowly changing and I think in the future will be seen differently. The scientific views on homosexuality are homosexuals inborn or is it caused due to environmental influences. That is a question that have been asked and wondered for many years, but in modern days there is evidence directing us towards homosexuality developing as an inborn characteristic. Research done on both identical and fraternal twins, show that there are higher concordance rates of gay monozygotic twins. Rathus, Nevid, and Fichner-Rathus, (2005) report that about ââ¬Å"52% of identical (MZ) twin pairs were found to be ââ¬Å"concordantâ⬠(in agreement) for a gay male sexualà orientation, compared with 22% of fraternal (DZ) twins and only 11% of adoptive brothersâ⬠(p. 312). Also, evidence has suggested that hormonal influences could be responsible for differences in sexual orientation. Rathus, Nevid, and Fichner-Rathus (2005) explain that prenatal sex hormones be responsible for tissues in the brain to think sexually one way, but for genital development to be the other way. Also, structural examinations on the brains of heterosexual and homosexual males have provided speculative evidence that a part of the hypothalamus in gay males is smaller than that region of the hypothalamus in heterosexual males. Developing an understanding from the scientific view point on homosexuality has helped homosexuals understand why they are the way they are. Before scientific studies provided the information that homosexuality could be due to inborn, many individuals believed that people decided to be homosexuals. After the scientific studies though that thought is seen as false, and the reason why people become homosexuals is because they are born that way. Homosexuals do not choose their sexual path they are born having sexual arousals from the same sex. Homosexual people do not hate them self as much knowing the facts from the scientific studies that they were born that way, rather than choose to be that way now they feel it is how god wanted they to be and they can accept them selfââ¬â¢s. Out The Closet and Accepting Who they are The biggest goal to overcome when being a homosexual is when the perfect time to come out the closet, and admit to our family and friends (hey Iââ¬â¢m a homosexual). Not only is finding the perfect time hard to find, but also finding the right words to use when telling them you are not just going to say hey Iââ¬â¢s a homosexual. Another difficult obstacle to overcome is accepting the different view we will see from society when coming out. Many homosexuals are afraid to tell friends and family because they have not completely grasped the concept of what they are. This is especially seen in someone who is transformed from heterosexual to homosexual. Another thingà that bobbles around their thoughts when coming out is that they will lose important people in their life or lose their job. Coming out or letting people into your homosexuality is a very challenging experience that is one of the most difficult task a homosexual will face. One of the most common deaths an early homosexual faces is suicide normally for one of two reasons understanding their new sexuality or the fear of coming out to other people about it. Once a homosexual takes control of their power and accepts the fact they are living a life of homosexuality they can adjust to what society expects from them. After they can accept what society thinks of them they can form a relationship with an intimate partner, and develop a perfect homosexual lifestyle. Historical and Scientific Views Reflected on Personal Sexuality Oneââ¬â¢s personal sexuality has been molded and determined by history and scientific views that are seen in oneââ¬â¢s life culture or society. Historical and scientific views reflected the way people see their own personal sexuality for the better. It has helped homosexuals better understand why they are the way they are, and they are not different that throughout time there has been people of the same sexuality facing the same problems. In modern time the punishment might not be as harsh as back in ancient time, but it is still there and seen. Homosexuality is still frowned upon by many, and many also criticize and harass homosexuals because of their difference in behavior. In the future with homosexuality become more open and known about to the public I think that schools should teach about it at an earlier age to help the younger society better understand it. Homosexuality in most cases is misjudged and treated in the wrong way if people learned about it at an earlier age t hey could learn to have a kinder understanding, and be more accepted of homosexuals. Another benefit of teaching it at an earlier age is that it would give people the benefit of know why they are the way they are, and if they feel they are different.Homosexuality has been around for thousands of year before Christianity it was accepted freely, but after the religion started growing rules banned homosexuality from being free. The alliterative poems Pearl and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight unite traditional Celtic mythology with Christian orthodoxy to produce a distinctly British Christianity The Catholic church in fourteenth century England was undergoing a convulsion. The church was unable to explain why God inflicted the Black Plague on the citizenry, or to conjure up his mercy and end the suffering and death. The Babylonian Captivity saw the papacy in Avignon, under the influence if not the direct control of the hated French. Even when Rome once again became the seat of the Holy See, the Great Western Schism divided the loyalties of Christians between the two rival popes -- who excommunicated each other and all the other's followers. Corruption among the hierarchy of priests and bishops seemed epidemic. As ever, "The obvious alternative, for anyone wishing to withdraw from the ideological and bureaucratic complexities of the Christian empire, was to return to the simplicity of the Church's founder," (Saul 544). We still see this today, in evangelical and fundamentalist Christian sects. Lollardy was one reaction to the church's apparent loss of direction. John Wyclif and his followers disavowed the authority of the papacy, the truth of the sacraments, and the dogma and doctrines of the Catholics church. The alliterative poems Pearl and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight also turn away from the orthodoxy of the Catholic church. By the subtle yet simple technique of excluding Catholic doctrines, and by adapting the mythical British past into the Christian present, these poems illustrate the development of a specifically British Christianity. While the poems may seem to approve of Lollardy, we would be in error in believing that. Rather, these heretical views all flow from a common wellspring in the English character that would later lead to Protestantism and the establishment of the Church of England. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was to be scornfully dubbed "Mariolotry" by Protestants, but was at the time (and remains) a central doctrine of Catholicism. Teachings of the church "formed so vital a part of literary backgrounds" (Ackerman 81) that someone unfamiliar with Catholicism would fail to understand the literature of the period. Both Pearl and Gawain treat as normal veneration of the Virgin Mary. This is, however, the only piece of Catholic orthodoxy these poems contain; all the other Christian symbols and allusions are taken directly from the Bible, not the church. My Brother Sam is Dead Author: by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier Category: Historical Fiction Summary: It starts out in the 1770's during the Revolution War and Samuel Meeker or Sam for short just interred the room of the tavern and he chimes in to everybody who is waiting to eat, he comes in saying where beating the Lobster Backs. His father, Eliphalet Meeker but called Life for short, starts arguing with son. After a while they calmed down and change the subject. Finally Tim Meeker or sometimes called Timmy, the narrator and one of the main two character's of the story in the story goes out to the barn to milk the cow Old Pru. Witches are one of his daily chores and ask Sam to join him. While Tim is milking Old Pru he's talking to Sam about how has he been lately and what is he doing back at home. And Sam tells him truth why he is back at home, and it's to get the Brown Bess. Which is the family's gun and Tim swears that he can't tell Mom or Dad. Well in the morning when Sam try's to get the Brown Bess his father catches him and they get big fight whether he's going to fight the British or not and finally his dad throws him out the house. While the Meeker's are at Church, Sam goo's back to the Tavern, where his family lives and work's and he stills the Brown Bess. Well later on the Rebel's or the patriot's or now called the American's. Went threw the town of Redding. Which is where the Meeker's live. They where going door to door. Taking peoples guns and goods. When they came to the Tavern they where demanding for there gun. They wouldn't believe that there son stole it and took it with him to the Rebel's camp and they wouldn't believe him cause it was Tori territory and that they where threatening to kill Life if they didn't give them there gun. Then Tim ran out the door and he ran to go get Colonel Read. Since he knew that Sam was a Rebel and colonel read was a colonel for the Rebel's, but when he got to where he was he saw Sam with the Gun sleeping with it. Then he snatched it and started running back to his house and when he was half way there Sam woken up and was yelling him to stop but he wouldn't stop, but since Sam was older and bigger he caught Tim right as they reach the town of Redding. Then Tim had to explain what had happen and Sam didn't want to go back but he went with Tim just in cas... ... was a well written book it was very detail and good storywriter but the end didn't have a big enough bain. Like it just made it like a dull ending but all the way up to where Tim goes crazy on the Rebel's. He also kind of fueled you which is kinda good when u first read this tittle you think the British killed Sam when it was Rebel's. what kinda sucked about it is that they dragged out to the end. which made you know what's going to happen when ending came. that's why it was so dull cause I was on the last page and Sam still hasn't been killed yet so I knew right away what was going to happen. Recommendations: I would recommend this if you want to study the sight affects of the war. but if your like me and you're proud to be an American, Patriot, or a Rebel then I wouldn't read this it talks about how bad it was for the Rebel's to go war for no good reason. When in fact it was cause later we became the greatest country in the whole wide world. Everything about this country is so much better than anything else so that's why IM proud to be an American. Before a fight is held, a fighterââ¬â¢s profile is summarized, mentioning the personââ¬â¢s height, weight, reach, and their win/loss record. All of what is mentioned is said to play a big part in the flow of the match. The purpose of this investigation is to determine if there is a relationship between a boxerââ¬â¢s reach and his winning rate. The data that will be taken will be professional boxersââ¬â¢ measured reach and their counts of wins and losses for winning rate.The measurement of a boxerââ¬â¢s reach is used to determine how far he can extend his punch. The measure of boxersââ¬â¢ reaches and their records of wins and losses will be used to determine if reach is one of the larger factors that affect an athleteââ¬â¢s chances in a match. Plan The investigation will include data gathered from professional boxers, which are their reach and their counts of wins and losses. The data that will be collected can be collected from official sites online, which have brief profiles of athletesââ¬â¢ measurements. I will be using official sites since they tend to be up to date and have accurate and legit information.The amount of data collected will consist of 30 athletes, half of whom are male and half are female. The data wi ll be collected from official boxing sites such as BoxRec. com, which contains the profiles of numerous official boxers and their measurements, which includes their reach and wins and losses. The data for one athlete will consist of his reach and his win/loss record. I will attempt to avoid any professional athletes that are relatively new to the professional stage, so I will be looking at boxers with around at least five years of experience.Once the data has been acquired, the data will be analyzed using different mathematical processes. A scatter plot will be used to plot out said data. The correlation coefficient r will be calculated. Discussion/Validity The investigation carried out to observe the correlation of Win rate and reach and win rate and gender has a few limitations that have affected the outcome of the results. One limitation is that although it is taken into account the reach of each boxer, their size and weight places them in different classes for professional fights. This means that f ighters would normally be fighting people that have similar size, and theoretically, similar reach.With similar reach between two fighting boxers, the outcome of an athleteââ¬â¢s history of fights really could have been affected by other factors such as tactics and strength. Another limitation would be the fact that all of the collected pieces of data are all of high win rates. In boxing records and leagues, if there is a boxer who has won 90% of his matches, there should also be a boxer who has lost that many of his matches as well. The collected data covers 30 pieces. This is done to supply a large amount of data, enough to give reasonably accurate results.Half of the data gathered covered male boxers and the other half covered female for the purpose of investigating the dependency of win rate on gender with chi squared. One limitation in regards to the genders, is that there is no co-ed boxing, meaning that females and males do not compete with each other and are separated int o two genders for boxing matches. The data that was collected for males and females consisted of high win rate percentages, and in boxing, when there is an individual who has won 70% of his matches, there is sure to be an athlete who has lost 70% of his matches as well.The investigation shows that there is a very low correlation between reaches and win rate for boxers regardless of their gender. This outcome could have been affected because of one of the mentione d limitations above, where boxers of similar size and weight are placed in the same class and fight, so reach becomes less of a factor for victory as compared to strength, speed, and tactics. Women Are Less Engaged in Criminal Activity Than Men On Crime: Women Take the High Road Historically Women Are Less Engaged in Crimes Who knows why people commit crimes ââ¬â maybe because they think they can get away with it. Maybe theyââ¬â¢re just desperate, hard up for money, or doing it for the sheer thrill of taking the risk. In any case, people commit crimes every day: an ex-con robbing a convenience store, a businessman giving a client a much-needed, doctor-prescribed painkiller. Itââ¬â¢s so easy to commit a crime that they go unnoticed and often without consequence. And if you look at human nature, you see how most of the ruthless criminals of ancient history have mostly always been men. Sure thereââ¬â¢s been some women, but women are just less engaged in criminal activity than men. It comes down to anatomy and psychology, parental instincts and statistics. Male and Female Brains Letââ¬â¢s look at brain development for more insight into this argument, that women are less engaged in criminal activity than men. It has been documented that femaleââ¬â¢s brains develop about an average two years earlier than male brains, so that means a maleââ¬â¢s brain develops much later than the femaleââ¬â¢s brain. It is also common knowledge that the male brain is not fully developed until the age of 25, especially the prefrontal cortex of the brain responsible for impulse control and decision-making. Why is this important? Because it shows how men ââ¬â especially young men ââ¬â are more likely to make bad life decisions, ones that most certainly lead to, or involve crime, even if only petty crimes. This is certainly an indication of how women are less engaged in criminal activity than men. With this said, women are also more likely to experience, and pursue, their parental instincts when compared to men ââ¬â especially young men, 18 to 25, the age when too many young men are arrested for committing various crimes ââ¬â underage drinking, drinking, and driving, drug possession, assault and battery, etc.; though some of the men being convicted are of course innocent, a majority of them were involved in a crime or crimes. Females ââ¬â well, teenage girls ââ¬â reach puberty before males (adolescent boys) do, and females mature much faster than men. While young women are looking for life partners, creating a future, a family, and a life, men their age certainly are not. Young men in their late teens, early 20s, are drinking and driving, doing drugs, taking risks ââ¬â and frequently break the law. They are not thinking of these things ââ¬â life partners, their future. Some are, of course, but until they are in their mid-20s, the brains of males are not fully developed like females, which illustrates how males may be more likely to engage in criminal activity than females. Speaking Statistics All you have to do to see that women are less engaged in criminal activity than men is look at the numbers of inmates in the American prison system. A graph on prisonpolicy.org shows the American prison population by gender, ââ¬Å"United States Incarceration Rates By Sex, 2010.â⬠The graph shows the number of people incarcerated per 100,000 people of that sex; it shows 126 females to 1,352 males. If more men are serving time in a penitentiary than women, clearly this is an indication of how more men are engaging in criminal activity than women. In conclusion, women do less crime than men. Consider the evidence ââ¬â it comes down to anatomy, biology, and psychology; then thereââ¬â¢s instincts, sexual vs. parental; and top of that, there are the numbers: there are many more men in prison than women; so men are more likely to engage in criminal activity. Or consider this notion ââ¬â what if women are just better at hiding their criminal activity than men? Itââ¬â¢s a very objective question to consider, and it is always important to consider the alternate school of thought, the other side of things. After all, things arenââ¬â¢t so black and white, more of a gray color, when mixed together. Nonetheless, the evidence illustrates that men are more engaged than women, in criminal activity. This is a problem our society must face with objectivity and compassion. Why is this so? It doesnââ¬â¢t have to be this way, however. There is always a better way to reach and teach young males and get them to steer away from drugs, alcohol abuse ââ¬â crimes, essentially. There is a problem if the men of your community are in jail and not at home or at work providing for their families.

Coffey is special, as Paul discovers, and he has magical healing abilities that become clear. The second of three inmates, Eduard Delacroix befriends a small white mouse, who he names Mr. Jingles, and Coffey heals the mouse when the young and reckless guard Percy Wetmore tried to kill it. Coffey also heals Pauls urinary tract infection, and later, Paul temporarily breaks him out of the prison to heal the wardens wifes brain tumor. Coffey transfers this brain disease to Wetmore, the cruel guard who the inmates and staff dislike. Wetmore never recovers and spends the rest of his life in a mental institution. Eventually, Paul discovers that Coffey is extraordinary in many areas. It turns out he did not murder the two girls, another inmate (William Wharton) or as the inmates call him Wild Bill had murdered the girls. Coffey doesnââ¬â¢t want to be pardoned, and dies in the electric chair because he can no longer cope with the vicious cycle of real life. After his death, Paul discovers that each of the people Coffey has healed live unusually long lives. Paul is 108 at the end of the book, and Mr. Jingles is 64. They have no idea how long they will live, and then the novel ends. Characters Paul Edgecombe Paul is the main character. A prison guard, by the end of the story he is an old man narrating this part of his life to a friend who is writing his memoir. John Coffey A nearly 7-foot-tall black man, a convicted murderer awaiting his death sentence on death row in the prison. He befriends a white mouse and heals people of their diseases. Percy Wetmore A sadistic prison guard who everyone dislikes. He torments the prisoners, tries to kill Mr. Jingles, the mouse, and deliberately botches an execution where the inmate suffers terribly. He keeps his job because he is related to the governor. Eduard Delacroix A Cajun man convicted of arson, he is essentially a coward. He is the man who dies a horrible death at the hands of Wetmore. William Wharton Another convict, it turns out he is the one who actually committed the murder attributed to John Coffey. He is wild and frightening, and attempts to disrupt the prison as much as he can before he dies. Mr. Jingles The white mouse that lives to be 64. Overall the novel is a timeless classic, was definitely filled with information that the movie obviously doesnââ¬â¢t have. Though the movie was also amazing and was nominated for 4 Oscars. It displayed great screenplays from Tom Hanks to Michael Clarke Duncan.

In addition, students will learn the importance of statistical analysis in General Chemistry laboratory experiments and also rules with respect to exponential notation and significant figures. Background Information Mathematics in chemistry is essential. One cannot truly perform a chemical experiment without utilizing mathematics in their data and results. Therefore, it is imperative that one grasp the concept of the important topics or areas of mathematics that will be utilized throughout General Chemistry and the General Chemistry laboratory. There are two types of observations in Chemistry: qualitative observations and quantitative observations. Qualitative observations consist of non-numerical observations, such as the color of a substance or its physical appearance. Quantitative observations consist of numerical data, such as the temperature at which a chemical substance melts or its mass. With respect to qualitative observations, in order to record and report measurements, scientist utilizes the metric system. The metric system is used internationally and is called the International Systems of Units (SI). The International Systems of Units are shown below in Table 1. It is a very useful technique. Equation 1.1 (Proportionality Conversion Factor) shows how dimensional analysis can be applied in solving problems in Chemistry. A proportionality factor is a ratio (fraction) whose numerator and denominator have different units but refer to the same thing. A proportionality factor is often called a conversion factor because it enables us to convert from one kind of unit to a different kind of unit. An example of how this can be used is below: Example 1: What would be the value of 157 g if you were to convert it to kilograms (kg)? We calculate the mean by taking the sum, à £, of the individual measurements, x, and dividing by the number of measurements, n, as shown in Equation 2. Example 4: An experiment was performed where one measured the mass of a penny using a balance. The experiment was done 5 times and the results were as follows: 6.47 g, 9.24 g, 4.67 g, 6.54 g, 5.55 g. What is the average, or mean of this experiment? Solution 4:Mean = Note: 5 is the number of trials (n) Experimental Error If you measure a quantity in the laboratory, you may be required to report the error in the result, the difference between your result and the accepted value (Eqn. 3), or the percent error (Eqn. 4). Percent Error = Standard Deviation Laboratory measurements can be in error for two basic reasons. First, there may be ââ¬Å"determinateâ⬠errors caused by faulty instruments or human errors such as incorrect record keeping. Secondly, ââ¬Å"indeterminateâ⬠errors arise from uncertainties in a measurement where the cause is not known and cannot be controlled by the lab worker. One way to judge the indeterminate error in a result is to calculate the standard deviation. The standard deviation (Eqn. 5) of a series of measurements is equal to the square root of the sum of the squares of the deviations for each measurement from the average divided by one less than the number of measurements. The rules for determining the amount of significant figures are as follows: Zeroes between two other significant digits are significant. For example, both 5309 and 50.08 contain four significant figures. Zeroes to the right of a nonzero number and also to the right of a decimal place are significant. For example, in the number 3.70 cm, the zero is significant. Zeroes that are placeholders are not significant. There are two types of numbers that fall under this rule. The first are decimal numbers with zeroes that occur before the first nonzero digit. For example, in 0.0015, only the 1 and the 5 are significant; the zeroes are not. This number has two significant figures. The second are numbers with trailing zeroes that must be there to indicate the magnitude of the number. For example, the zeroes in the number 15,000 may or may not be significant; it depends on whether they were measured or not. To avoid confusion with regard to such numbers, we shall assume in this book that trailing zeroes are significant when there is a decimal point to the right of the last zero. The rules for using significant figures in calculations are as follows: When adding or subtracting numbers, the number of decimal places in the answer is equal to the number of decimal places in the number with the fewest digits after the decimal. In multiplication or division, the number of significant figures in the answer is determined by the quantity with the fewest significant figures. The Selective Service Act Essay --
In 1917, the Selective Service Act was created. Back then, there were very few women serving in the military. As of last year, there were about 214,000 active duty women serving in the United States Military (Women in the, 2012). The Selective Service Act is outdated. The Selective Service Act should be amended to allocate that women should have to sign up for selective service, just as men have too. Since the creation of the Selective Service Act of 1917, the role of a woman has evolved from the common role of a housewife, teacher or nurse. Now women have access to and are equally able to join many different career fields that were once gender based. The case Rostker v Goldberg 1981 debated whether or not women should be excluded from the Selective Service Act. Congress came to determine that ââ¬Å"since women are excluded from combat roles in the Armed Forces, then they are not similarly situated for the purpose of the draft (Rostker, 1981)â⬠. According to the Army Times in 2012, ââ¬Å"The Army will start placing women in as many as 14,000 combat related jobs (Tan, 2012)â⬠. So now, women are able to pursue combative careers in the military. Furthermore, women signing up for selective service will help increase the Armed Forces if the country is in need. According to Congress, ââ¬Å"adequate armed strength must be achieved and maintained in order to insure the security of our nation (Selective Service, 2013)â⬠. Having women on the draft will help to ensure that America will have enough members of the Armed Forces to be at war and to protect the home front. At first impression someone might think that global warming does not effect everyday life, but the current situation with global warming cannot be ignored. Humans could be in serious danger because global warming destroys the earth?s ecology and effects everyday life by creating an unhealthy environment. The important issue of global warming is that the greenhouse problem is recognized and we try to do our best to solve the problem. The effects of global warming could create an ecological disaster. The underlying fact that the greenhouse effect will have serious effects on humans is very relevant. Dickinson is able to so effectively present the importance of sight because in 1864, she spent seven months in Boston undergoing eye treatment. In Poem 327, she appears to be reflecting on this experience, as well as exploring further possibilities, hence the use of the conditional tense. This is undoubtedly a poem of praise for vision, yet this is balanced by the solitary nature of the poem which creates a sense of pathos. Whilst traditionally womenââ¬â¢s poetry was considered to be more polite, this is definitely not true of this poem, which uses raw, visceral imagery to emphasise the importance and power of sight. Dickinson establishes three distinctive parts to the narrative; before the narrator ââ¬Ëgot [her] eye put outââ¬â¢; after the event and the possibility of her regaining her sight in the future. Dickinson refers to the narratorââ¬â¢s loss of sight as her having her ââ¬Ëeye put outââ¬â¢. The aloof expression with which she relates such a critical event immediately excites the readerââ¬â¢s attention. Pathos is created with the narrator mourning for her loss and reminiscing about times when she ââ¬Ëlikedâ⬠¦to seeââ¬â¢. Furthermore, by capitalising ââ¬ËEyesââ¬â¢, Dickinson emphasises the word and portrays the ideal quality that eyes now possess for the narrator. The reader is able to appreciate that the narrator has needed to find a way to cope without sight; she is no longer one of the ââ¬Ëother Creatures, that have Eyes/ And know no other way-ââ¬Ë. Through blindness, the narrator has been forced to develop her imagination. The strength of her imagination is portrayed as something which is, perhaps, better than ââ¬Ëfinite eyesââ¬â¢ and it appears that the narrator has almost been enlightened since losing her sight. Dickinson conjures up intense, eidetic images of ââ¬ËMeadowsâ⬠¦Mountainsâ⬠¦Forestsâ⬠¦Starsââ¬â¢. In the final stanza, Dickinson equates the mindââ¬â¢s eye with the imagination and ââ¬Ë[her] soulââ¬â¢, implying that sight is affected by our thoughts and pre-conceptions. She also suggests that people need to look out through ââ¬Ëthe Window paneââ¬â¢ and perceive what is outside the limitations of their own body. This is possibly something the narrator is able to do now that her mind is no longer affected by her sight. Sight holds such great importance for the narrator that it is bound up with a wide range of emotions. When the narrator is first presented with theà possibility of regaining her sight, she declares ââ¬Ëmy Heart/ Would split, for size of meââ¬â¢. The forced cesura makes the reader pause, and the exclamatory quality of the syntax reflects the ââ¬Ësplitââ¬â¢ and its release of energy and bountiful emotions. The repetition of ââ¬Ëmineââ¬â¢ suggests the narratorââ¬â¢s hunger for ownership of the images. If she owned them, she would be able to satisfy her need by looking at them whenever she desired. In the penultimate stanza, Dickinson uses dashes to isolate ââ¬Ëto look at when I likeââ¬â¢. This is the climax of the poem and the isolation of this phrase highlights the magnificent phenomenon of sight. The narrator expresses her resignation to a life without sight ââ¬ËSo safer ââ¬â guessâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢. However the narrator does also seem to be aware of t he benefits of remaining blind because whilst sight is presented as being incredible, it is also presented as dangerous ââ¬ËWhere other Creatures put their eyes- / Incautious ââ¬â of the Sunââ¬â¢. The poem describes a very solitary experience, about the narrator in commune with some higher power. The narratorââ¬â¢s Romanticism is illuminated by her passion for and desire to hold on to the minutiae of the beauty of nature. This is evident from her description of ââ¬ËThe Motions of the Dipping Birdsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËThe Morningââ¬â¢s Amber Road-ââ¬Ë. The use of capital letters highlights the significance these images hold for the narrator and the detailed descriptions demonstrate that her mindââ¬â¢s eye can contain finer details alongside the vastness of the large features of nature, such as ââ¬ËMeadowsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËMountainsââ¬â¢. Dickinson uses hyperbolae ââ¬Ëmy Heart/ Would splitââ¬â¢; ââ¬ËThe News would strike me deadââ¬â¢ to portray the intensity of the narratorââ¬â¢s emotional experience. One of Dickinsonââ¬â¢s contemporaries, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, employs a similar hyperbolic technique to demonstrate her passions ââ¬ËHow do I love thee? Let me count the waysââ¬â¢. This is not the only parallel which can be drawn between the two poets; both show a similar confidence in being able to discuss the soul through poetry. Browning says ââ¬ËMy soul can reach, when feeling out of sightââ¬â¢, while for Dickinson, the issue of the soul appears not just in this poem, but is several others too, such as Poem 280 and Poem 309. The way in which Dickinson sets out the stanzas in this poem seems to reflect the narratorââ¬â¢s response to losing her sight, through the way it builds andà intensifies emotion. From something quite ordinary like ââ¬Ëother Creaturesââ¬â¢ in the first stanza, the emotional intensity rises in the second stanza, continues to do so in the third stanza and climaxes in the fourth, before falling in the fifth, in reflection of her resignation. The more frequent use of dashes as the poem progresses act to punctuate and emphasise what the narrator is saying and also indicate the build up of emotion. The isolation and repetition of ââ¬Ëmineââ¬â¢ in the third and fourth stanzas illustrates the tension and selfish nature of the narrator. The poem climaxes in terms of intensity in the fourth stanza and Dickinson then brings the intensity down to safer levels, which is highlighted by her use of the word ââ¬Ësaferââ¬â¢ in the first line of the final stanza. The repetition of ââ¬Ëother Creaturesââ¬â¢ provides balance to the poem. The symmetry is strengthened as a result of the similar emotional tones in the first and fifth stanzas. This could be reflective of the symmetry and balance of nature, of which Dickinson has shown herself to be exquisitely aware. Through her different poems, Dickinson has shown her remarkable ability to sympathise with the varied challenges that people experience in their lives. La Grande Odalisque and Olympia: Comparison/Contrast
Two exquisite paintings with a female reclining nude as the focal point are La Grande Odalisque by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and Olympia by Ãâ°douard Manet. The female nude has been a crucial subject for art throughout history.à The angular curves and the sensuality that can be created with just a form has intrigued artist in the past, present, and future.à While the similarities of these two painting are more evident, there are still contrast between the pieces. Ingres was from France and he painted during the Neoclassical Period, while Manet, who was also from France, painted during the Realism and Impressionistic Periods.à Their live overlapped each other for only thirty years, but their styles belonged to different periods.à Ingres lived through the French Revolution and was very much affected by it although Manet was born after it was over. Seeing such a drastic change in the world in which he lived caused Ingres to pay very close attention to the details of the past.à He wanted to preserve it perfectly and he also looked to the techniques of the masters before him.à Manet was not so much concerned for the past, but his eyes were on the present.à His subjects represent the French societal and cultural setting of the time period in which he lived. La Grande Odalisque by Ingres is an oil painting of a lone nude female reclining on her bed.à Her body faces away from the viewer, while the woman looks back over her shoulder.à There is only a glimpse of her breast under one of her arms and the rounded sides of her buttocks are visible. Olympia by Manet has two females in the oil painting.à One is a black servant woman and the reclining female nude.à Manet depicted his nude facing the viewer.à Her breasts are completely exposed and her genitals are covered by her hand. There is a tropical feel in Manetââ¬â¢s paintingà à Even though she has covered part of herself, this female seems more open with her nudity and the female in Ingresââ¬â¢ painting is more subtle and alluring with her body. Ingres uses muted shades of green jewel tones to create an elegant effect.à Manet also incorporates the color green, but he emphasizes the stark white which allows the female to stand out.à The white also gives a harshness to the painting.à It is as if someone turned on a bright overhead light in the middle of a sensual moment.à The model in Ingresââ¬â¢ painting tends to blend with her surroundings. Both females hold something with her hand, but Ingresââ¬â¢ femaleââ¬â¢s fan is one of peacock feathers which blends in with the rich tones of the background.à At the barefoot of Ingresââ¬â¢ nude, there is a pipe and green stool, while there is a black cat at the high healed feet of Manetââ¬â¢s.à Manetââ¬â¢s figure wears an orchid in her hair as well as the shoes.à She finds no modesty with the observation of her servantââ¬â¢s stare and is completely open with her sexuality. The female nude is the predominate subject of both paintings but the differences reflect their artist and there artistic periods.à While they are both alluring, they are also starkly contrasted.à Manet and Ingres were definitely masters of their times, and the La Grande Odalisque and Olympia are examples of both of their best work.à Both of these works are alluring and sensual paintings that will mystify viewers as long as the two works exist.
